A supplement label is a legal document, not a marketing brochure. Nearly everything you need to judge a product — how much you are actually getting, in which chemical form, and whether anyone has verified it — is printed on the back of the bottle. The front is where the marketing lives.

This guide walks through how to read a supplement label in the order that matters, so you can compare two bottles in about sixty seconds and know which one is worth your money.

1. Start with the serving size, not the big number

The single most common way a label misleads without lying is the serving size. A front label that shouts 1,500 mg is describing a serving — and that serving may be three capsules, or four.

Two questions answer this immediately:

  • How many capsules is one serving? Divide the headline number by that figure to get the per-capsule dose.
  • How many servings are in the container? A 120-count bottle at four capsules per serving is a 30-day supply, not a four-month one. This is also where a cheap product quietly stops being cheap.

2. Read the form, not just the milligrams

This is the line most people skip, and it is where the real differences live. The number tells you how much compound is in the capsule. The form — the word in parentheses after the nutrient — tells you how much your body can actually use, and how well you will tolerate it.

Some ingredients also carry a distinction between the compound weight and the elemental weight. Minerals are the classic example: "500 mg magnesium oxide" is not 500 mg of magnesium. A well-written label states the elemental amount explicitly.

3. What a proprietary blend actually hides

A proprietary blend is a group of ingredients listed under one combined weight. The label might read "Focus Blend — 850 mg" followed by eight ingredients and no individual amounts.

This is legal. Ingredients must still be listed in descending order by weight. But you cannot tell whether that 850 mg is a meaningful dose of the first ingredient and a dusting of the other seven, or an even split — and in practice, the expensive ingredients are usually the ones present in trace amounts. The blend exists precisely so that comparison is impossible.

There is one legitimate argument for blends: protecting a genuinely novel formula from being copied. Weigh that against the fact that neither you nor your physician can assess what you are taking. If a brand is confident in its dosing, there is little reason to conceal it.

4. % Daily Value in context

The %DV column compares the amount in a serving against a general reference intake for adults. It is genuinely useful for a quick sanity check — 25% DV versus 900% DV tells you a lot at a glance.

Two caveats worth holding onto:

  • It is a population reference, not a personal target. Your requirement shifts with age, diet, sun exposure, medication and health status.
  • Some nutrients show no %DV because no reference intake has been established. That is normal and not a red flag on its own.

Very high percentages are not automatically better. For a handful of nutrients there is a defined tolerable upper intake level, and a stack of overlapping products can push you past it without any single label looking unusual.

5. The "Other Ingredients" line

Below the panel sits a short list covering everything that is not an active ingredient: the capsule shell, flow agents, anti-caking agents, colours and binders.

Most of these are functionally necessary — a powder that will not flow cannot be encapsulated consistently. What is worth noticing is how long the list is. A short list generally indicates a manufacturer who kept the formula tight; a long one, particularly with several colourings, suggests priorities other than the contents.

This line is also where dietary information lives. Gelatin capsules are animal-derived; vegetarian capsules are usually HPMC or pullulan.

6. Verification: the part that is not on the label

Everything above is a claim the brand is making about itself. Verification is separate, and there are two distinct things that are frequently confused:

  • cGMP manufacturing — Current Good Manufacturing Practice. This governs how the facility operates: cleanliness, documentation, process control. It says the product was made properly. It does not confirm what ended up in the bottle.
  • Third-party testing — an independent laboratory, unconnected to the manufacturer, assays the finished product and issues a Certificate of Analysis (COA) confirming identity, potency and contaminant limits for a specific batch.
